The Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a prayer consisting partly of the biblical salutation of the Archangel Gabriel and Elisabeth to the Virgin Mary (Luke, Chapter 1, verse 28), and partly of texts added in the 15th century. Many composers (such as Josquin des Près, Verdi, Schubert and Gounod) have set this text to music. Schubert, for example, used a German translation of an extract from Sir Walter Scott's poem "The Lady of the Lake". The Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod is also very famous. In fact it is a melody based on the first prelude of Bach's "Wohltemperierte Klavier" (The well-tempered Clavier) combined with a "Meditation" by Gounod in counterpoint.

Het "Ave Maria" (of Weesgegroet) is een gebed dat gedeeltelijk gebaseerd is op de bijbelse groet van de Aartsengel Gabriel en Elisabeth aan de Maagd Maria (Lukas I, vers 28) en gedeeltelijk op vijftiende-eeuwse teksten. Heel wat componisten (o.m. Josquin, Verdi, Schubert en Gounod) hebben dit gebed op muziek gezet. Zo baseerde Schubert zich op een Duitse vertaling van een gedicht uit Walter Scotts gedicht "The Lady of the Lake". Even bekend is het Ave Maria van Bach/Gounod dat bestaat uit de Eerste Prelude van Bachs "Wohltemperierte Klavier" met Gounods "Méditation" als contrapunt.

De nombreux compositeurs (dont Josquin des Près, Verdi, Schubert et Gounod) ont mis cette prière en musique. Schubert, par exemple, s'est basé sur une traduction allemande d'un extrait du poème "The Lady of the Lake" de Sir Walter Scott. Tout aussi célèbre est l'Ave Maria de Bach/Gounod. Une mélodie basée sur le premier prélude du "Clavecin bien tempéré" de Jean Sébastien Bach avec la "Méditation" de Gounod en contrepoint.

So stützte sich Schubert auf die deutsche Übersetzung eines Gedichtes aus Walter Scotts Gedicht: "The Lady of the Lake". Gleichfalls bekannte ist das Ave Maria von Bach/Gounod, das sich aus dem Ersten Prélude von Bachs "Wohltemperiertem Klavier" und Gounods "Méditation als Kontrapunkt zusammensetzt.
