The Black and Gold

Spirit of 1907

The Black and Gold celebrates the birth of Scouting and the pioneering drum and bugle bands that sprang up with it. Written for the 1st Whitstable Scout Group Band — Kent’s oldest Scout-linked brass band, founded in 1919 — the music captures the optimism, adventure and camaraderie of those early days. From the first experimental camp on Brownsea Island to the bugle calls echoing across Kent’s fields, this piece honours the movement’s founding spirit and the young musicians who gave it voice.
